It reduces gastric acid secretion by competitively blocking histamine at parietal cell H2 receptors, treating peptic ulcers, GERD, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, erosive esophagitis, and preventing stress ulcers; onset within 15 minutes, lasting 12 hours.
